Weight: The males of this breed weigh between 45 to 60 kilograms (99 – 130 pounds) and the females weigh 32 to 45 kilograms (70 – 99 pounds).

Height: The male Akita stands impressively between 66 to 70 cm (26 – 27 inches) and the female between 60 to 66 cm (23 – 26 inches).

Color/s: The Akita breed of dog boasts of several different colors and combinations. The basic colors being black, chocolate and white. There could also be combinations of white with different colors. The Akita is bestowed with rich, gleaming and distinct colors.

Overview: The originality of this breed goes back to the island of Honshu from the Akita region in Japan. It was bred to guard the royals and the nobles during feudal upheavals. This is a large dog with a well balanced body. The area of the skull between the ears is flat and broad with a powerful jaw. It has a thick muscular neck which gradually becomes wider towards the shoulders. The tail of the Akita is full and is carried high with a curl.

Character: The Akita projects a bold and noble character which is at the same time rather intimidating. It is fearless and shows extreme loyalty towards its master and family. Akita does not turn away from any challenges and it is not easy to frighten them. It enjoys the company of its family.

Temperament: Though this breed is docile, it is highly intelligent and brave. It is very careful in its interaction and shows a lot of affection towards its family. But sometimes excessive eagerness gets the better of them which should be handled in a confident and firm manner. Being evenly tempered, the Akita doesn’t usually bark much unless there is very good reason for it. This breed is suspicious of strangers. It exhibits a stand-offish attitude towards guests to the house but at the same time not so unwelcoming.

Care: The Akita needs a lot of grooming. This is best achieved with a firm bristled brush which can easily manage the stiff, coarse, short haired coat that it has. This breed sheds hair heavily about two to three times in a year. Brushing the coat on weekly basis will help it remain shiny and healthy. The dog needs a bath once in every three to four months but excessive bathing may cause damage to the natural water resistant property of the coat. The nails should be trimmed on a regular basis. The ears need to be checked and cleaned every week so that no infections set in.

Coat: The Akita has a double coat. The under-coat is very thick and rich, whereas, the top-coat is short, stiff and coarse. The growth and length of fur of the coat is dependent on climatic conditions. In places where there are hot months after cold seasons, the length of the fur will be approximately of one inch but this doubles in length during colder months.

Training: The training schedule for the Akita must start from day one. Socializing is one of the fundamentals of the training. Without this the Akita may become aggressive. The training process must incorporate positive encouragement along with firmness and a high level of consistency. Patience must be exercised during the training period. Dominance must be established at a very early stage. A well trained Akita is a delight to have around the house.

Activity: This breed needs reasonable amount of activity to stay in shape. It is advisable to take the Akita for long walks on a daily basis.

Life Span: Akitas have a life span of 10 to 12 years.

Health Concerns: Generally this breed is robust and healthy, but like all breeds they are susceptible to certain health problems. Due to genetic dispositions, Akitas may suffer from hip dysplasia. ‘Bloat’ is another condition that this breed suffers from. Conditions such as hypothyroidism and progressive retinal atrophy may also afflict the Akita. It may also suffer from a condition called sebaceous adenitis or SA, when it loses hair on the top of its head and has dry and scaly skin. All these health problems can be controlled with proper care and grooming.

Ideal Living Quarters: Although it is better to have a large yard, but the Akita adjusts well to an apartment. But it must be borne in mind that it is adequately exercised daily.
