Alaskan Malamute

Weight: The weight of this breed varies between male and female. The male weighs about 85 lbs while the female weighs about 75 lbs.

Height: The height of this breed also differs between male and female. The height of the male is around 25 inches while the height of the female is around 23 inches.

Color(s): The Alaskan Malamute's coat could have a color of light gray, white with some shading, shades of sable, red with some shading or all white.

Overview: The Alaskan Malamute originated in the Arctic region where it is best suited to withstand the cold climate. It was found amongst the Mahlemuts in Alaska and was utilised to pull load like seals and bears into the village. It is also used as a sled dog but it is not as fast as the Alaskan Husky. The breed nearly faced extinction during the gold rush of 1896. They were rescued by breeders in New England during the 1920s. They are popular for the role they played in Admiral Byrd's trek to the South pole. They were also utilised as search and rescue dogs during World War II.

Character: This breed is friendly, affectionate and loyal. It is also intelligent which makes it have a mind of its own and thus making it a little bit stubborn. They are energetic as puppys but they become calm as they grow older. The dog is quiet but may be prone to occassional howling and digging.

Temperament: These dogs are very friendly towards children. They cannot be used as watchdogs because they are too friendly. They should also be monitored around smaller pets due to their prey instinct. They could be aggresive to Malamute's of the same gender. Thus, early socialisation is required so as to make them get along with other dogs and pets.

Care: The Alaskan Malamute's coat should be brushed about twice weekly because of its thickness. Bathing should not be too frequent as they shed their dirty coat. They eat anything presented to them and thus, shouldn't be overfed because they might become obese. They are not suited for warm climates. If they should be in warmer places, there should be shade, water and a cooling system.

Coat: This breed has a dense double coat. The outer coat is thick and coarse while the inner coat is greasy and wooly. They nornally grow their coat during winter and shed them in the spring.

Training: The Alaskan Malamute is friendly but shoud be trained with a firm approach. They are difficult to housebreak. Therefore crate training is recommended to assist in housebreaking.

Activity: This breed needs regular exercise. They could become depressed or aggressive if they don't get their regular exercise. They also enjoy pulling a sled or a wagon.

Life Span: The Alaskan Malamute has a life span of between 10 to 12 years.

Health Concerns: This breed could experience some health issues like musculoskeletal and skin related diseases, hip dysplasia, chondroplasia and bloat. If the dog behaves in an uncharacteristic way, it should be taken to the vet.
